The Henry and Mary Jane Conn family, with their seven sons, emigrated to Oregon from Cass County, Indiana in 1854. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born to them in Polk Cpounty, Minnesota during their journey. When they arrived in Roseburg, Oregon, their first stop was at the ranch of the Lane family. Henry carried with him a letter of introduction addressed to Lane from a respected friend back East. Henry became a friend of General Joseph Lane.

Henry Conn purchased the 613 acre claim of Mr. Hale on the South Umpqua River at a spot that came to be known as "Conn Ford" at Melrose and built a house there in 1862. He later acquired more acreage in that area. The Henry Conn house was torn down in August of 1954.

Henry was a Royal Arch Mason, a prominent Free Soil Democrat, and was active in organizing the Unionist Party. Henry was known for his fine Percheron horses, raised from stock that he brought with him from Indiana.
