DEATH OF HON. JAMES W. CONN IS DISTINCT LOSS TO COUNTY AND STATE
It is always especially sad to record the passing away of one of the states earliest pioneers, as it is our duty to note the death of Hon. James W. Conn, who died at his home residence at Melrose in this county on the 6th inst., at 3oclock in the afternoon, after an extended illness from the effects of a combination of stomach affections and influena, and after constant care of loving hands and most efficient and skillful medical aid.
He came to Douglas county when but three years of age, having been born in Cass county, Indiana, June 11, 1851, and came with his parents crossing the plains, direct to the Umpqua valley in 1854. His parents were Henry and Mary Conn, early settlers and pioneers of this county. The children of those parents in order of age were George, deceased; Henry, of Melrose; Harmon, of Portland; Virgil, of Paisley; Frank, of Portland; Elizabeth, Anna McCurdy and Creed, deceased, and Lafayette, of Lakeview, and Narcisse of Melrose.
James W. Conn was married to Sarah Catherine Denney, October 13, 1878, in Jackson county, Oregon, who died March 23, 1918, and they are survived by the following children of that marriage; Mary A. Crane, of Melrose; Charity Churchill, of this city; Henry P. Conn, of Melrose; Creed Conn, of this city; J. Francis Conn and David G. Conn, of Umpqua; Amy O. Matthews and Margaret A. Matthews, of Melrose.
Of this old pioneer it can be truthfully said he was a good man and useful citizen, an affectionate Father and loving friend and neighbor. He was honored by the people of this county by election to the Oregon Legislature of 1899, and made acreditable service while there.
To his family and his friends his loss is deeply mourned, while to our county an state the vacancy he has left will be most deplored by those who knew him best.
The family services will be held at the family home at 2 oclock on Tuesday, February 10th, and the burial services to follow immediately thereafter at the Melrose cemetery.
