Victor I. Rieck, one of eight children of Herman J. and Augusta Rieck, was killed in action in France just a few weeks before the end of World War 1. He was the first Utica soldier to die in that war. Local American Legion Post 351 was named in his honor. The post is located on the east side of Shelby Road, across from the Utica Cemetery where he's buried.
