"David Smith was born April 6, 1822, died February 19, 1899, aged 76 years, 10 months, 13 days. Was born in Ohio, parents moved to Indiana when he was four years old; from there to Illinois when he was 21 years old; from there he came to Bates County, Missouri in 1872, where he has since resided; came to this vicinity December 26 to visit his son, J.J. Smith, and his daughter, Mrs. Annie Beavers. Took sick night of February 12 with la grippe and erysipelas and died at the home of his son. He was converted and united with the Christian church about 1852 in Illinois. He went to Iowa for a short period and on his return united with the United Brethren; when he came to Missouri he placed his letter with the Christian church again where it now remains.
He leaves an aged wife, one daughter and five sons to mourn his loss.
Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at this place, Rev. L.S. Jones officiating."
