Nelson E. Ward, 85, of Buckland, retired Charlemont postman
Nelson E. Ward, 85, of Charlemont Road, a retired rural mail carrier for the Charlemont office of the Postal Service, died on Wednesday in the Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield.
He retired in 1967 after many years of service. A lifelong resident of Buckland, he was a member of Mary Lyon Church. He was a 1920 graduate of the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, and later was graduated from the Stockbridge Agricultural School in Amherst. He was also a past master of the Buckland Grange, served on the School Committee during the early 1930s, and was a member of the Rationing Board during World War II. He enjoyed hunting. He leaves his wife, the former Blanche E. Wilder; two daughters; four sons; 25 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Alma Shippee, died in 1967. The funeral will be Saturday morning in the church, with burial in Taylor Cemetery. There are no calling hours at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home of Shelburne Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, in care of Sue Rainville of Gardner Falls Road, Shelburne Falls, 01370.
