Margaret Jane Rideout was born in Utah to David Oliver Rideout, Sr. and Lucinda Rilla Ann Mariah Reid. She was named for her father's younger sister, Margaret Jane. The family called her Mamie. My mother recalled her Aunt Mamie always wearing a white blouse and long dark colored skirt. She wore a corset. She tied the corset strings to the bedstead and pulled against them until they were tightened and she had a tiny 23 inch waist. One time Mamie was going somewhere on the train, and this woman came up to her with a small child. She said that she could not keep him and did not want him anymore.
