Mary Olive Rideout was born at Brandon in Madison County in the Montana Territory. She was the youngest child of David Oliver Rideout, Sr. and Lucinda Rilla Ann Mariah Reid. She was named for her mother Lucinda's eldest sister, Mary Emma Reid, and Olive for her father. She had hazel green eyes and brown hair. She married Joseph Lee Jones in Dillon, Beaverhead County, Montana in 1899. They had three daughters. Mary always wore a skirt, never pants. She rode side saddle on her horse. Mary loved to ride and the family rode horseback all over the place. She was an excellent cook, even over the campfire where she often found herself cooking. Many times she worked cooking for crews of men. Some of her best recipes were Swedish rye bread, her pies and her Boston cream cake. She kept a large barrel full of her homemade dill pickles by the door. Her husband, Joe, liked to pick one of these crispy pickles out of the barrel every time he came home. It was a favorite treat for him. All the recipes were kept in her head, and she cooked by "feel". She was in demand for her hand beading on clothing. The men would bring their shirts to her so she could put beading on the yokes. Mary hand sewed everything and knit the family's socks and gloves. One of her favorite places was up Fourth of July Creek in the Lemhi Valley of Idaho. She married Charles William (Bill) Thomas in 1926 in Canada. Mary loved to laugh and was very much loved and adored by her family. Wendy M. Van Roekel, June 2010
