AGED SCULPTOR DIES DESTITUTE

Man Created a Baron by Napoleon III, for Artistic Skill Succumbs to Age and Disease

Alfred de Wolffer, a sculptor whose works evoked praises from the European monarchs, and who for his skill was made a baron by Napoleon III, died yesterday in Los Angeles in Absolute poverty. For the past two years the aged sculptor and his wife have been supported by the Associated Charities of the city.

De Wolffer and his wife came to California in the early nineties and settled in San Francisco, where his work made him well-known and well-to-do. The fire of 1906 cost the couple their home and their daughter who died of exposure following the disaster.

De Wolfer then came to Los Angeles and tried to re-establish himself, but he had no acquaintance here, and though his work was praised by local dealers, he received scarcely enough to maintain himself. Two years ago De Wolfe failed in health and his wife was forced to ask for help.

Friends have started a movement to help the aged wife, who is suffering from rheumatism and is not expected to live long. They will try to find a home for her. De Wolffer was 73 years old.

-------

Baron de Wolffers' death certificate lists the cause of death as nephritis, with bronchitis a contributory cause. His daughter died of a kidney ailment. He and his wife are in unmarked graves not far from their daughter Pauline, along the East wall of the cemetery.

A son, Paul de Wolffers, drowned in the Passaic River in New Jersey in 1896 at the age of sixteen.
