Thomas was the fourth child of Joshua Lee Cardwell and Susan Frances Hieatt. He married Martha Lapsley Read, daughter of Alfred Blackburn Read and Martha Jane Jett, on September 17, 1901, in Franklin County, Kentucky. Thomas and Martha were the parents of 10 children, Alfred Blackburn, Susan "Susie" Lee, Thomas Allen, Jr., William Edgar, Sr., John Read, Martha Jane Jett, Peter Doddridge, Sarah "Sally" Catherine, Julia Arnold, and James Lapsley.
