First wife was Mary Louisa Spencer, nee Blunk, married 11 Feb 1857 in Dubois County. Louisa was older than William and had children from a previous marriage. Her first husband was Frank Spencer.

The 1860 census in Dubois County, Indiana has William incorrectly enumerated as William Prewitt, age 28 living with wife Mary L Waddell age 30, children: Sarah Spencer age 18, Julia Spencer age 14, Martha Spencer age 13, Francis Spencer age 14, Ellen Spencer age 9, Mariah Spencer age 6, Caroline Spencer age 5, John Waddell age 4, and Elijah Stewart age 5 months.

William and Mary L were parents of John and Amos. 1870 census in Birdseye, Hall Twp, Dubois Co, shows John age 13, Amos age 7 as sons and a Caroline Spencer age 17 as a domestic. This Caroline is Amanda Caroline Spencer who married Charles Ahrens, William Beard and Anthony Batch, and is the daughter of Mary Louisa Blunk and Frank Spencer.

Second wife was a very young Sarah L. King, married on 17 Mar 1874 in Dubois County. He is 50 on the 1880 census and she is 20.

Third wife was Matilda S. Brown nee Smith, daughter of Hezekiah Smith and Elizabeth Sturgeon, born in Crawford County, Indiana, married on 29 Dec 1890 in Dubois County, Indiana. This was Matilda's second marriage and William's third. Matilda was born in Marion County, Iowa where her family migrated and lived until after the Civil War. By 1870 the Smith family was back in Indiana.
