Martha was the daughter of Jesse David Hughes & Grace TANNER. She married Jack Abbot Bonnett, son of Samuel & Mary Elizabeth LORENTZ.

Martha was captured by Indians in Dec 1787. She was about 14 years old. She was released and returned in 1790. The family claimed that she was too hard to control so the Indians returned her. Information about her capture and release are on her tombstone. The reality is that her father a famed Indian fighter and scout (Jesse David Hughes(Hews) probably paid for her release. Her tombstone reads as follows: Martha, daughter of Jesse Hughes/Born Dec 1772/Made prisoner by the Indians Dec 1787/Married Jacob Bonnett 1792/Died Dec 1834/Age 61 years.

Edd Marks emailed that his research indicates that Martha had a younger sister that was named Martha after it was thought the first Martha was dead. When the first Martha returned the second Martha was renamed Mercy(pronounced Massie) and she married Uriah Gandee.
