ELIZABETHTOWN – Cyrus G. Agnew, for many years a well-known resident of Elizabethtown, passed away at his home on Park street Saturday night, October 3rd, after a long illness.

He was the last to survive of ten children born to William Agnew and Sarah Gray Agnew of West Plattsburgh, N. Y. He was born July 14, 1868, and was therefore past 74 years of age.

Mr. Agnew came to Elizabethtown more than 50 years ago, a very fine looking young man, and became very popular among the young people. He sang in the choir at the Methodist church for a long time.

For some years he operated the stage route from Elizabethtown to Lake Placid, and later from Elizabethtown to Westport; and was one of the last to drive the four to six horse stagecoaches. He is said to be the first here to drive the automobile over the road in the winter when it was so hard to keep it from freezing. He went to the Mack Automobile School to learn to drive a car, first learning to take the car apart and put it together again. For about 25 years he had conducted the stage route between Elizabethtown and Westport, more recently, with his son Raymond, and had become one of the outstanding men of the community.

On April 28, 1896, Cyrus G. Agnew was united in marriage to Elizabeth Gertrude Davis, daughter of the late Marten B. Davis and Mary Wilson Davis of Elizabethtown. To whom was born one son, Raymond, who with his mother, survive. A grandson, Franklin Agnew, and two granddaughters, Hazel Rae and Mariam Elizabeth Agnew also survive, and several nieces and nephews.

To all these Elizabethtown people extend sincere sympathy.

Funeral services were held at the Agnew home at 3:30 Monday afternoon with Rev. Stanley Carne officiating. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
