I, Carrie Mae Gale (Wilkins) Mc Grath was born 22 December 1887 in Diez, Chihuahua, Mexico, the eleventh child in a family of fourteen children. When I was six years old the family moved to Thatcher, Graham Co., Arizona. My first school year was in Thatcher.
In November 1896 we moved to Franklin, Greenlee, Arizona, where I grew up, seeing the church and school start from so few in number. The Gale and McGrath families started the first Sunday School there. Others came later, a new country, ditches were made, homes were built. I was the first and only organist for many years there. Mother bought a small organ for me to learn on, which was hauled all around for church services in the wagon along with the family, and to play with Father's violin for dances for miles around us.
I have served as President of Relief Society, Mutual and Primary, and as a teacher in all the organizations. I also served on the Franklin School Board of trustees two terms, ending in 1924.
The Wilkins family moved to Franklin 7 October 1897. That was when I first met Earl. We went to school together. Our teacher was Ada Tippets Packer, on year. On 8 March 1905 we were married. My brother William T Gale performed the ceremony. To our union was born seven children -- six girls and one boy. We worked hard and had many hardships to overcome, and did what we could to supply the needs of our family and give them an education and to keep them as well as ourselves interested in our church duties. They are all married and have families--my grandchildren at this date (1956) number twenty-seven, twenty-five still living, nine of them married and they have given me twenty-two great grandchildren, am thankful for them all.
My great sorrow was to lose my dear companion and father of my children. He passed away 21 Jul 1939 in Mesa, Arizona and is buried in the Mesa Cemetery, and my place reserved there for me. Baley and Sister Hattie are there nearby.
I was first set apart as a Temple Worker in the Arizona Temple 6 January 1937 and released 12 May 1941. Called again 16 October 1947 released again 20 June 1956 because of ill health; a real privilege that has meant to much to me.
Having known James Franklin Mc Grath since my childhood and he having lost his wife, we were both alone so decided to be married. He has been a great blessing and companion. He was set apart for a Temple Worker when we moved here in 1947, October 16th, and will continue there as long as his health permits.
My work as the genealogy researcher for our Gale family since 1917 has been a great joy to me, as Father James Gale told me he was depending on me.
