Mary Ann was a daughter of Elijah and Mary Ann "Polly" (Simmons) Holder. She was the sister of: Jane C., Apholine, James, Sarah C. and Henry. Mary Ann with her husband, William and 3 small children moved North Carolina to Tennessee in 1861. Then in November, 1872, they came by team of horses and covered wagon (conestoga) to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. It took two months to travel that distance. They built a log house and settled southwest Sergeant Bluff in a area known as Weedland. She was married to William A. Holder on January 16, 1855 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. They had the following children: Walter Napoleon "Poley", Green Nelson, Freelove Ellen and William K.
