He became a watchman and jeweler in Bemidgi MN. We have an envelope addressed to Mrs Freda Arbuckle, Wadena MN from John A Arbuckle, Watches, Clocks and Jewelry, Bemidji MN.

By 1900 they were living in Sentinel Butte ND. Their house was near the river, had a dirt or sod roof and was made of logs. The cracks were filled from the outside with what was called gumbo (clay). It dried real hard, almost like plaster. There was a steel range cook stove and a pot belliede heater.

John cut cottonwood trees for wood and when the river froze over the neighbors helped each other get soft coal from the high river banks.

John had a beautiful horse, Banjo, who was black with a white spot on his forehead and white socks.

He was county assessor for several years in ND.

John died at Camp Glacier in Whatcom Co Washington.
