Josephine E. Holm, 91, passed away January 31, 2011 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Josephine was born on November 25, 1919 in Green, Kansas, the daughter of Mable M. (Murphy) and Joseph H. Yeager. She graduated from Green High School and Kansas State College for Normal Training. She spent four years as a rural school teacher. Josephine enlisted in the United States Coast Guard (SPARS) on March 13, 1943 and entered active service on June 11, 1943. She received her training in Palm Beach, Florida. Josephine served in New York City and attained the rank of Storekeeper First Class. She received an Honorable Discharge form the service on May 17, 1946. Following discharge from the service, she was employed by Kansas Power and Light Company in Topeka, Kansas. She later was employed with John Morrell and Company in Topeka, Kansas and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Josephine was united in marriage to Harlan D. Holm of Wakonda, South Dakota on May 23, 1953. To this union two sons were born. Josephine is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harlan; sons, Harlan D. Holm, Jr. (Linda) of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Alvin C. Holm (Sandra) of Little Canada, Minnesota; five grandchildren (Kendra Elizabeth Seema Holm, Drew Alexander Holm, Macalester Clark Holm, Tara Elaine Sukeshini Holm, Madison Merry Holm); three sisters, Alberta Smith of Concordia, Kansas, Betty Lou Pokorny of Hays, Kansas and Lorraine Bramwell of Concordia, Kansas, and one sister-in-law, Harriet Hansen of Centerville, South Dakota. Josephine was the first female Coast Guard Veteran to be laid to rest in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
