Chester Hartranft Snyder, son of John Hartranft Snyder and Minnie Rebecka (Strohecker) Snyder was born in Lavelle, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Beloved by his nieces and nephews who called him "Uncle Ches," his siblings and friends knew him as "Bing" or "Bingo."
Bingo's dad, John H. Snyder, was a respected county and business leader, and was one of the co-founders of the Lavelle Telephone and Telegraph Company, which was incorporated in 1908. John H. Snyder was responsible for installing the first telephone lines in the Lavelle Valley, as well as in rural areas south of Ashland, Pennsylvania. During the firm's early days, its main communications center was based at the Snyder family home on Main Street in Lavelle. As a chief stockholder and secretary of the company, John H. Snyder oversaw the firm's expansion which connected the Lavelle center with Bell Telephone Company's Ashland facility. After 47 years of transmission, full control of the firm was transferred to Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania in 1956.
In addition to John's involvement with the Lavelle Telephone and Telegraph Company, Minnie, John, and their oldest children also operated a dry goods store from the ground floor of the Snyder family home in Lavelle, which was located directly across from the Lavelle School.
Bingo married Roma May Haas on 15 Jun 1933 in the parsonage of the Salem Reformed Church in Leck Kill. The Rev. James Beam officiated. Together, they had three daughters: Corinne, Susan and Barbara Snyder, and one son, Chester H. Snyder, Jr.
A 32nd degree Mason, Chester H. Snyder was active in his community and was a long-time insurance professional with Prudential, retiring as a sales manager.
He and May celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 3, 1983. They were residing in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania at the time of his death. May later passed away in 2003. They are interred in Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA.
