March 4, 1988 - Carroll Times - Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll for Mabel W. Bayley, 103, who died Thursday, March 3, at the Carroll Health Center nursing home in Carroll. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Celebrant for the Mass will be the Rev. Frank Nemmers. Lectors will be Sister Mary Elizabeth Heller and Sister Barbara Ann Hausman. Gift bearers will be Sister Josephine Schoeman and Sister Rita Mae Fischer. The choir will be directed by Sister Sharon Schroeder. Casket bearers will be Dave Auen, Jim Auen, Steve Auen, and William Lammers. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be a scriptural prayer service at 4:30 p.m. today by the Franciscan Sisters.

Born Sept. 20, 1884, near Lidderdale, she was a daughter of Herman and Winifred (Kelly) Best. She grew up in the Glidden and Lidderdale communities. On Sept. 16, 1908, she was married to William S. Bayley in Omaha, Neb. Following their marriage, they lived in Nebraska for a short time and then in various communities until 1918, when they made Carroll their permanent home. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1958. She had been a resident at the Carroll Health Center home since January 1977. She was a charter member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll and the Parish Ladies Guild, of which she was a past president.

Survivors include six daughters, Helen (Mrs. James) Reid of Sioux City, Harriet (Mrs. Warren J.) Hamill of Des Moines, Laura (Mrs. Joseph) Gauderman of Eugene, Ore., Dorothy (Mrs. Ike) Auen of Carroll, Sister Janine (Hazel) Bayley, FSPA, of Carroll and Jayne (Mrs. M.D.) Huffman of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren: and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William, in 1966; a son, Cecil, in infancy; two sisters, Mary Onken and Laura Juergens; a brother, Delbert Best; and three sons-in-law, Warren J. Hamill, Joseph Gauderman, and Ike Auen.
