Mr. Bayley was an employee of the Chicago and North Western Railway for about 30 years until retiring in 1945. For the next ten years he was employed by the Carroll Country Club. He was born Sept. 16, 1878, at Searsboro, a son of John and Harriett Bayley. As a young man he went to Boston, Mass where he attended Harvard University for two years. Subsequently he spent a year in Europe, returned to the East Coast, and later took two more trips abroad, spending one year in England.
On Sept. 16, 1908, he was married to Mabel Winifred Best in Omaha. The couple made their home two miles north of Glidden, where Mr. Bayley farmed and then moved to Jefferson, living there five years while he was employed as a salesman. The family moved to Carroll in 1915 when he began his railroad employment. The Bayley home is at 808 North Court Street.
Surviving are his wife; six daughters, Mrs. James (Helen), Reid, Sioux City; Mrs. Warren J. (Harriet) Hamill, Des Moines; Mrs. Joe (Laura] Gauderman, Eugene, Ore.; Mrs. Eilert (Dorothy) Auen, Carroll; Sr. M. Janine (Hazel) Spokane, Wash.; and Mrs M.D. (Jane) Huffman, Des Moines; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; a brother Van Buren Bailey, Grinnell; and a sister, Mrs. Laura Stanley, Dallas, Tex.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother, and two sisters. Mr. Bayley was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1637, which held memorial services at the funeral home Sunday evening.
