He served as a volunteer in the company raised in Cornwall and commanded by Capt. Edmund B. Hill. He served in the battle of Plattsburg, NY on Sept. 11, 1814. Later he was colonel of the militia. He was a church deacon and town clerk for over 20 years and was in the State Legislature for several years.

He married Laura Smith on July 7, 1812, daughter of Capt. Joel and Tryphena Mead) Smith. He later married Hannah Powers in 1840.
