Olympic Games Gold Medal Athlete. A standout basketball player at the University of Missouri, after graduating in 1948, he played for the National Industrial Basketball League's Peoria Cats (the team sponsored by his employer, the Capillarity Tractor Company). In 1952, he was selected as a member of the United States Olympic Basketball Team to compete in the Summer Olympics that year, which was held in Helsinki, Finland. During those games, he co-captained the team as it went undefeated in tournament play and helped the United States win the Gold Medal when they beat the Soviet Union in the championship game 36 to 25.
