John Jordan Sportsman came to Texas from Dodge City in 1890. He was the father of John Robert (Jack), George Arthur, Laura, Betsy, Emma, Elizabeth, James and Harvey. John J. and his family settled near Valdasta and later moved to McKinney. Here he engaged in the livery stable business with his sons, Jack and George.

John enlisted in Keetsville Missouri to serve under Gen. Sterling Price during the war of 1861-65. He died Aug. 15th 1922 at age 77.
