Hugh Sportsman, one of Chariton county' oldest and most widely know citizens, departed this life Saturday, July 12, 1913. His death occurred at the home of his sister, Mrs. Lucy Adams, near Mendon, and resulted from an attack of paralysis.
Mr. Sportsman was born in this county, May 16, 1830, and at the time of his death was 83 years, 1 month, and 26 days old. Practically all his life was spent in this county, with the exception of a few years spent in Texas many years ago. He had lived in Keytesville until last winter, when he went to Texas and Oklahoma. He returned to this county this spring, and after spending a short time in Keytesville, went to the home of his sister near Mendon, where he spent about one month before his death.
Mr. Sportsman leaves one brother, J. J. Sportsman of McKinney, Texas, and five sisters, as follows: Mrs. Susan Blakely of Brookfield; Mrs. Louisa Graves of Wyanoka, Oklahoma; Mrs. Elizabeth Maupin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Mrs. Stacy Neighbors of Independence, Mo., and Mrs. Lucy Adams of Mendon. His wife preceded him to the grave about four years ago.
A short funeral service was conducted at the Adams home Monday morning by Rev. Baker of Mendon Methodist church, after which the remains were brought to Brunswick for burial.
