Martha graduated from Belleville Township High School, where she met her future husband, Ernest D. Craig (1900-1925). They were wed on Oct. 16, 1918 at Waterloo, Ill. A doctor wrote that Martha died from "acute miliary tuberculosis" in 1922, however, her family was well aware that she died, as her sister related, from "a botched back-office abortion, demanded by her thoughtless husband who didn't want any more kids."

Her husband Ernest remarried, had two more children, and died in a mining accident just a few years later in 1925. They had one daughter, Eileen (1919-2003), who was adopted and raised by her grandparents, John and Florence Browning and her aunt Edythe McKean. They lived on Barco Street for many years. Eileen married Virgil "Tut" Thurston, divorced and then married Harold Storck.
