John's parents were Reuben and Martha Browning. When John's mother Martha died when he was seven, his father married Henrietta Ketten.
John married Florence R. Peter (1874-1946) on July 22, 1899. John was a coal mine foreman and farmer. They lived in Belleville on Main Street for several years before he built his home out in the country at 103 Barco on a square acre of land, half of which was a fruit orchard with apple, pear and cherry trees and a grape arbor.
Their children were:
Martha Elizabeth Browning (1900-1922) m. Ernest Craig
Clifford Alan Browning (1901-1976) m. Mayme Stoehr
Edythe Marie Browning (1902-1991) m. George "Pat" McKean

When Martha and Ernest Craig died, John & Florence adopted their daughter Eileen Craig.

John was treated for black lung disease from his mining days, and died at the age of 77.
