Revolutionary War soldier in the Spartan Regiment of the SC Militia (Pension 1832 Fayette Co, AL).

Samuel arrived with family at Charleston, SC on 18 Oct 1772 from Ireland, and obtained a land grant in present day Spartanburg Co, SC. Family tradition passes down that after seeing the beauty of the area during their Revolutionary War Service, Samuel and several of his Peden siblings took up land and settled in Fairview, Greenville Co, SC. Samuel's wife Katie died in 1807 near Fairview. He married 2nd Margaret Unknown. Samuel was a founding elder of the Fairview Presbyterian Church in 1795. Written in the church's original records, "Feb 20, 1818 Samuel Peden's family removed to Alabama Territory, regularly dismissed."

Samuel's sister, Jane Peden Morton Morrow (Rev. War Heroine) had recently removed to the Territory, in the now Morgan Co, AL area. Samuel and his family arrived and soon continued further south in Alabama; in 1824 to Fayette and Tuscaloosa Counties. Other associated Peden families left SC going west into the Fayette Co, Tennessee and Tishomingo Co, MS areas. These early Peden's younger branches did continue to travel, intermarry, and resettle among the different AL, MS, and TN Peden cousin settlements.

In 1834 Samuel Peden bought and settled on land in Kemper Co, MS. He founded Smyrna Presbyterian Church and was the first to Rest in the church's graveyard. Samuel and Katie White Peden have many descendants now living in MS, AL, Ark, and Texas.

Samuel Peden married Katherine "Katie" White after his Revolutionary War service, and they had the following children:
