Suggested edit: Samuel was head of the mercantile firm S.H. Alexander & Sons in Moorefield, WV and was a member of Company G, 14th Virginia Militia. He enlisted at Winchester, VA on 3/10/1862 and was appointed 1st Lt. Commanding Company B, 11th Virginia Cavalry, 5/14/62. He was captured at South Fork, Hardy County on 11/09/1862 and sent to Atheneum Prison and on to Camp Chase in Maryland. There he was described as age 25, 5' 10 1/2", fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, and brown whiskers. Having been exchanged, he led a detachment of 60 men into Hardy County on 1/4/1863. After becoming ill, he appeared before a medical examining board, 10/23/63, was found unfit for further duty on account of dyspepsia, resigned 11/2/63. He took the oath of allegiance on 7/1/65 at Moorefield, WV.
Samuel and his family moved to Mansfield, Illinois but returned to Moorefield, WV when his health worsened. He was the proprietor of the Mullin Hotel on Main Street in Moorefield.
