Marcellus was a Private in McNeill's Partisan Rangers, an independent cavalry unit that was formed from members of Company E, 18th Virginia Cavalry and the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. He enlisted in Rockingham County Virginia on Oct 25, 1863 and was paroled on May 10, 1865 in Romney, WV. He was described when paroled as being age-19, height-5' 8", complexion-fair, hair-light, eyes-gray.
