In 1798 or 1799 he obtained a large tract of land in the French Creek/Sandy Lake area of Venango County and a parcel on the western edge of Polk Borough where he built a small log cabin. Village was known as Waterloo at that time, now Polk. His farm was said to have been the first improvement ever made on the present site of this town. He was a member of the Venango Guards (as was his son-in-law, Henry P. Strickland in 1823). He married Jane Brown.
