Hilda (Bjella) Benson, 100, of rural Bemidji, MN, died on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at GoldPine Home, Bemidji.

A memorial service will be at 11 am on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Aardahl Lutheran Church near Bemidji, with the Pastor Mary Marotte officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, MN.

Hilda was born May 27, 1912 to Tollef T. and Kari (Groff) Bjella in Bemidji. She attended the Farden Elementary School. Following her schooling, she worked in households in Bemidji and Minneapolis.

She married Alfred M. Benson in 1935, and after living their first year in Bemidji, they moved to the farm in Rosby southeast of Bemidji. After raising their three children, Hilda worked in housekeeping at Bemidji State University and the Beltrami County Nursing Home.

Hilda was an outdoors person. She enjoyed working in the woods, picking many kinds of berries, and gardened even to the end of her life. She also enjoyed reading and puzzles, and having lunch at the Senior Activity Center. Hilda's family enjoyed her cooking, especially the numerous Norwegian specialties she favored.

Though the only member of her family not born in Norway, she maintained contact with her relatives there, and visited them six times, most recently when she was 91. Hilda has written two books of memories and family history to pass on to her family.

Hilda was delighted to celebrate her 100th birthday last May, and appreciated the many friends and family, including some from Norway, who gathered to observe the occasion.

She was a longtime member of the Hallinglag of America, and Aardahl Lutheran Church. Her activities included the Ladies group at Rosby Chapel, Nary PTA, the
Quilting Circle at Aardahl, and the Nary Homemakers Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son; five sisters and two brothers; and a grandson.
