Allen was the son of Benjamin Franklin Dickey and Lucy Temple Penn. He married Ethel Frances Nelson on November 24, 1915, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. They were the parents of 13 children, Woodrow Wilson, Leonard Ralph, Leland RaFell, Aleen Virginia, Cecil P., Vernon Benjamin Nelson, Arnold F., Aaron Conrad, Genevieve Ethel, Allen Thayne, Zola Naomi, Mary Lou, and Majorie Agnes.
