John Gillon was the son of Thomas Gillon and Euphemia McDonald Cronin. He was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, as were his brothers and sisters. But the family is also found in Glasgow in the 1841 census, so it is possible that Thomas established residences in both places. It was in Glasgow that John met and married Margaret Quinn and they were married February 2, 1869. John's occupation was "iron moulder."
