OBITUARY:
Mrs. Eliza Daniel Meets Horrible Death.
Burned To Death While Alone At Home In Cadiz December Twenty-Sixth.

Mrs. Eliza Daniel, a highly respected old lady of the city, was burned to death at her home in Cadiz on the morning of December 26th about nine o'clock. Mrs. Daniel lived alone at her home in this city, although another family occupied another portion of her residence.

From every indication when found it is evident that her dress caught fire from an open fire place while she was standing near it.

The Baker family, who occupy a portion of the house, were aroused by a noise from the room of Mrs. Daniel, and when they reached the door it was fastened inside, and through the window Mrs. Baker ascertained there was a fire in the room. They at once gave the alarm, and the fire department responded.

A number of neighbors also rushed to the scene, and when the room of Mrs. Daniel was entered, she was found lying on the floor in one corner of the room, with her clothing burned completely off her and the body almost burned into a crisp.

Several men removed the body to the porch, and Mrs. Daniel gasped a few times before she ceased to breath. The carpet on the floor and other articles in the room had caught fire, but these were soon put out by those present.

The body was moved to the home of the son, Mr. Will J. Daniel, where funeral services were held Saturday morning, conducted by Mrs. Daniel's pastor, Rev. W.E. Mitchell, of the Baptist Church, and the remaims taken to East End Cemetery and there buried.

Mrs. Daniel was a splendid lady, highly respected and held in high esteem, and her tragic death brought deep sorrow to her many friends and relatives all over the County.

Mrs. Daniel would have been eighty-years of age the 5th of February and was the daughter of William Cunningham, in his day a prominent citizen of Trigg Furnace section. She had spent her entire life in Trigg County.

About one or two years ago she was united in marriage to the late Josh Daniel. The husband died many years ago, and two children survive. They are Mrs. Eula D. Hopson, of Canton, and Mr. Will J. Daniel of Cadiz. John Daniel, another son, died a number of years ago.

The family moved to Cadiz from the Daniel place near Mershon's lodge thirty-years ago, where they had since resided, and the husband died soon after coming to Cadiz.

Mrs. Hopson had left home on Saturday before to visit a daughter, Mrs. Robert Anderson, of Williamsburg, N.C. She was notified by wire of her mother's death, but the weather was so cold and the trip was so far that she was unable to return for the funeral and burial.

Mrs. Daniel was one of a family of nine children, seven sons and two daughters, all prominent in the affairs of the county and the sons of the home soldiers in the Confederate Army, and the only survivor of that family is Mr. Dan Cunningham who resides near Canton.

Mrs. Daniel was a member of the Baptist Church, and had been since girlhood. She was devoted to the Church and to her friends and in her death a splendid lady has been removed from the walks of life.
