My great grandfather, Matthew was born in Galicia, Austria/Poland. His parents were Janeusz and Maryla (Kozinska/Kosienska) Lechowicz. John and Mary.
I am using their Polish names to honor them and keep their heritage alive. Sadly, but once arriving in the US, many Polish Immigrants had changed the spelling of their names and surnames because of the language barrier. Very few, when first arriving and there after, could speak English. There are only a few left in our family who still speak Polish.
When he was about 23 yrs old he immigrated to the US, living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, where he married great grandma Agnes Wiklanska', 25 Nov 1902, at the St Joseph Church.
Their first 5 children were born in Chicago, Paul being the youngest, born at Lark's Lake Michigan on their family farm on Lechowicz Road. All but part of a structure is left at the property, now owned by a Lechowicz family member.
He was a member of the old St Nicholas Church in Lark's Lake, which was first built by our relatives. Burial being in the St Nicholas Cemetery.
