Alva Rettie D. Laird was born May 31, 1853 in Newton county, Miss. She moved with her parents to Texas at the age of 15 and was married to Benjamin Lewis Hancock Oct. 31, 1872. She was converted a year before her marriage and joined the Methodist church three years later and was a member until her death. Throughout her life she never faltered in the work for her Master. She was a loving and faithful wife and mother. To this union was born twelve children, two preceding her in death, one dying in infancy, and Mrs. Alice Watson in 1912.
She died at her home one-half mile south of Eakly March 25, 1931, being 77 years, 9 months and 25 days old, suffering only a few minutes before death.
She leaves to mourn her death a husband, ten children, all of whom attended the funeral, forty-nine grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
The children are: Mrs. Ida Howl, Bison; George Hancock, Eakly; Mrs. Annie Bradshaw, Earth, Texas; Ben Hancock, Rochester, Texas; Miller Hancock, Tulia, Texas; Mrs. Alva Oderkirk, Ft. Sill; Garland Hancock, Rochester, Texas; Mrs.
Cora Payne Farwell, Texas; and Albert Hancock, Oklahoma City.
