Born in Holland, Mr. Brooks came to America in 1917. He arrived in New York and hitchhiked across the country in this area and worked in logging for sometime and later for the Crookston Milling Co. He served in France during World War I, returning to this area. He was married to Helen Schultz in Bemidji in 1920 and worked for sometime at the Jewett and Helbig garages before buying a farm in rural Bemidji where he lived until two years ago when he retired because of ill health. His wife died in 1934, a son in infancy and another son, Donald was a casualty of the Korean war.

Surviving are four sons, Walter and Gerald of Bemidji, Roland of Davenport, Iowa, Eugene of Calumet, two daughters, Lucy Brooks and Mrs. Steve Lovering (Emily) of Bemidji; 20 grandchildren; a brother Lucas Vlarrdinger of California; a sister, Mrs. Anna Bergma of Racine, Wis.; two sisters and five brothers in Holland.
