After immigrating from the Macedonian region of Greece in 1906 with his brother Nicholas, he changed his name from Demitri Karademos to James Desmond. As family legend has it, he was on the run from the Greek mob. They bounced around the New York to New Hampshire area until another man with the same name ended up in the papers, killed by two Serbian thugs. James hit the road for San Francisco. By 1923 he had made his way to Chehalis, WA where he married Arlene Davenport; after that they moved to Seattle and had two kids. In Seattle he ended up running a prosperous restaurant. He died after his car ran off Spokane Street into a viaduct. Rumor has it that he was carrying a large sum of money, but is mysteriously disappeared.
