Longtime Alaskan Betty J. Young , 81, died May 13, 2006, at Alaska Regional Hospital.
A service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Al Aska Shrine Temple, 1930 E. Northern Lights Blvd.
She was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Hoquiam, Wash., and attended school through high school on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. Afterward she went to the University of Washington for two years. On Nov. 13, 1949, she married Leonard R. "Bud" Young . In 1950, they traveled the Alaska Highway to Fairbanks and then later to Anchorage.
After retiring from the Alaska Native Medical Center, where she was head of purchasing and supply, she was a head cook at the Al Aska Shrine Temple for many years.
She was a longtime supporter of the Shrine. She served as High Priestess in 1974-1975 and was a Royal Matron of Amaranth. She enjoyed traveling out of state to Lady Shrine functions and showing the younger girls the ropes. In Alaska, she and her family spent a lot of time at their peaceful cabin at Lake Louise.
She especially enjoyed bowling in her younger years and even won a state championship. Reading, knitting, cooking and collecting recipes were among some of her favorite things.
On their 50th wedding anniversary, she "adopted" four young friends as daughters -- Dale Hansen, Mavis Foyle, Patricia Rae and Roberta Uhl -- due to their love and friendship.
Her family wrote: "She always had a twinkle in her eye that made everyone happy. There was nothing she wouldn't do for family and friends and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her."
Mrs. Young is survived by her husband, Leonard "Bud" Young ; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Lona Young ; brother and sister-in-law, James and Sandi Desmond; nephews, Michael, James and John Desmond; grandchildren, Kevin Young , Jennifer Young , Debbie Baker, and Amanda Joiner; and great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Jamie, Tiffany, Jordan, and Brandon.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Young 's name may be sent to the Al Aska Shrine Temple Travel Fund, 1930 E. Northern Lights Blvd., Anchorage 99508.
Arrangements are with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
