Nathaniel was the son of Edwin and Miranda Monroe, born and raised in Farmersville, Posey County, a short distance north of Mount Vernon. The family lived on a farm purchased by Edwin in 1846. Nathaniel, known as Nat, worked as a farm hand and laborer for the entirety of his life. Nat never married. He struggled with alcoholism and ended up passing away from tuberculosis (his alcoholism played a role).

Nat's gravestone says that he died in 1914. However, his death certificate and newspaper obituary both agree that he died in 1913.
