Abel joined the U.S. Army in 1915. During WW I he served in France, England, and Luxembourg. He also served 2 terms in Hawaii during his career.
During WW II he served in North Africa where he was in charge of German prisoners. He was appointed Captain in 1942 and retired at Ft. Hood in 1946.

Survived by wife, one daughter and 3 sons.
