Jess Miller was one of the sons of Elijah Spencer Miller and Harriet Curbow. He was the grandson of two Civil War veterans: James Turner Miller and Tilman P. Curbow. He married his first wife, Hattie Jane Clayton in Collin County, Texas on 16 Dec 1906. The couple had four known children: John Spencer in 1907; Fannie Mae in 1909; Beatrice Etola in 1912; and Bethola M. in 1914. Hattie died young at the age of 25 on 19 Apr 1915. Jess Miller married again in about 1911 to Susie Annie Hyden. This couple raised a large family: Archie B. in 1918; James Ira in 1919; William Franklin in 1921; Vera Belle in 1922; Clifton Eugene in 1924; and Doris Evelyn in 1928.
