He had been in ill health for some time, but had kept on with his work and had managed to care for himself until about three weeks ago, when he became so ill he left his little home southeast of town and came to his sister's here in Westfield, where everything was done for his comfort that could be done.
His last illness was full of suffering, but he bore in uncomplainingly. On Sunday morning he seemed improved, ate a hearty breakfast, then suddenly collapsed and was gone.
On the 24th of September 1919, he was united in marriage to Erma Doty. To this union two children were born. The eldest, Vera Zoe, have preceded him in death. A son, Leland McMahon, who resides in Casey, Ill., is left to mourn his loss.
Besides the son he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Hettie Nichols of Danville, Ill., and Mrs. Elsie Edwards of Westfield, Ill., and one brother, Delmar McMahon of Charleston, Ill., a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
He was blest with a keen mind, had a jolly disposition, was a lover of nature, a good conversationist. He especially enjoyed keeping up with the news and the world's happenings in general.
His entire life was spent in and near Westfield and will be missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Free Methodist Church conducted by Rev. J. Roland Seybold. Music was furnished by Mrs. Fern Seybold and Mrs. L. H. Burry; Mrs. Grace Myers at the piano. Interment in Maple Hill Cemetery.
