Catherine Hartman was born on 23 February 1847 in Freeborn, Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Catherine's parents were John Hartman and Susannah (Rode) Hartman of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. The Hartman family emigrated to America in October 1853, arriving in New York on 10 October 1853. In 1860, the family was living in Trimbelle, Wisconsin. By 1865 the family had settled in Red Wing, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Catherine married Christian Zimmerman (Samuel Smith) on 21 April 1867 in Red Wing, Minnesota. Christian Zimmerman had served in the Civil War (Union) as a volunteer substitute for a Samuel Smith of Red Wing, Minnesota. The family name was changed to "Smith" in 1889.

"Mrs. Samuel Smith died April 12, 1915. Katherine Hartman was born in Germany in 1847 and came to America with her parents in 1857. In 1867, she was married to Samuel Smith. To this union were born twelve children, 11 sons and one daughter. Mrs. Smith has been a resident of this community for over 30 years and was highly respected by all who knew her."

"Mrs. Sam Smith Dead
"Another pioneer resident of Stevens county died at her home at Donnelly Monday noon when Mrs. Sam Smith answered the final call. She had been a resident here for forty-one years, and had lived on a farm six miles north of Morris most of the time.
"The remains were brought here yesterday and laid at rest in the family lot in the city cemetery. Rev. Woodcock conduced the service.
"Mrs. Smith was born at Freeborn, Germany sixty-eight years ago, her maiden name being Katherine Hartman. She came to American with her parents when nine years old, settling at Red Wing. Nine years later she came to Stevens county.
"She was the mother of twelve children. Two are dead, one son is in Canada and one son, William, is missing. The others are residents of this county, among then is Mrs. J.J. Morrison of this city. William married some years ago and about four years ago left for Montana. Nothing has been heard of him since and all traces of his whereabouts or his family have been lost. Mr. Smith resides at Donnelly to which place the Smiths moved last November."
