Francis "Frank" Smith married Sophia Modholt Ryberg (Rydberg) on 12 April 1906 at Elbow Lake, Grant County, Minnesota. His parents were Samuel Smith (aka Christian Zimmerman) and Catherine "Katrina" (Hartman) Smith of Stevens County, Minnesota.

Francis (Frank) Zimmerman was born on 14 Feb 1885 in Rendsville Township, Stevens County, Minnesota. His father, Christian Zimmerman was a veteran of the Civil War, and had been wounded while serving as a volunteer for Samuel Smith of Goodhue County, Minnesota. To receive Civil War Veteran benefits, Christian Zimmerman changed his name to Samuel Smith in 1889. He had been wounded in the battle of Bull Run while serving as Samuel Smith.

Francis (Frank) was the 9th son of the Zimmerman/Smith family. After the family name change to Smith and now known as Francis (Frank) Smith, he married Sophia Modholt "Sophie" Ryberg (Rydberg) on 12 Apr 1906 at Elbow Lake, Grant County, Minnesota.
