George was born in Konya, Turkey in 1892 although his death record says 1895. His name before coming to America was George Nicholas Damianides. He was born to Charlambos Nicholas Damianides and Despina. He had an older brother who had the same name as his father who changed his name to Charles Nichols. They also had a younger sister Despina.

My grandfather was greek and during the early 1900's the greeks and Jews were forced to leave Turkey. Many were imprisoned or killed. George immigrated to America on Jan 10, 1914 on the ship Pannonia. He lived in New York City until he was drafted into WW1. He entered the war Sep 22, 1917 . After the war he then moved to Winston-Salem where he lived for the rest of his life.

He worked in the restaurant industry, first at the Princess café with my great uncle Paul. There he met my grand mother and they married Nov 11,1926 in Winston-Salem. He then formed a partnership at the Victor Cafe in the late 20's with John Prodromos. They split up and each started their own restuarants in 1950. George opened the Wachovia Grill on Wachovia St and worked there till he retired in 1970. He died at a veterans hospital in Mountain Home Tenn. close to where my uncle John lived.
