John was born in Winston-Salem, NC. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1945. He started to attend college at UNC-Chapel Hill until WWII started. He left his education to fight in the war. On Dec 19, 1945 he enlisted in the army. He was an interpreter and Intelligence analyst. He spoke several languages fluently, German, French, Russian, and English. He recieved the World War II Victory Medal ;Good Conduct Medal with 1st Class Occupation; Medal with Berlin Airlift Device; Humane Action Medal; National Defense Service Medal. After the war was over he returned to UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a history major specialising in Russian history. He finished school in 1957 with a PHD. He moved to New Orleans where he taught at Tulane University and Newcomb College for a few years. There he met Janet Dorrene Swanson whom he would marry in 1962 and had they had twin boys. Thier marriage was short lived and they divorced about 1964. John moved to Johnson City Tennessee in 1963 and he taught history at Eastern Tennessee State University until shortly before his death. John was an excellent chess player and loved photography. Our family called him Johnny.
