Baptism records indicate that Johannes Dippel was baptized on 20 October 1789 at the Evangelical Protestant Reformed Parish (Lutheran), in Spangenberg, in the electorate of Hesse. His father was Alderman Johannes Dippel and his mother was Marie Elisabeth Zentgarbe. Johannes and his wife Catherine Elizabeth (most often referred to as Mollie) left Bremen on
3 November 1846 and arrived in Galveston 26 December 1846. They settled in Fayette County with their four children. By 1851, Catherine and two of their sons had died. Family lore suggests that malaria or possibly yellow fever contributed to their cause of death.
