She never married. By 1880, she moved to live with her sister Clara Beach Ludlum and family in St. Louis, Missouri. She worked as a salesperson or salesclerk.
After the death of John B. Ludlum, her elder sister Clara moved to the Memorial Home for the Aged in St. Louis, but the 1910 Federal census shows that Mary continued to work as a salesperson into her late 60s.
Her death certificate shows that she continued to work into her 70s, as a maid.
She died of apoplexy. Her body was sent to Conneaut, Ohio for burial.
At the time of her death, she lived on Shenandoah Avenue, across the street from a Miss Caroline Beach, who was the informant on Clara Beach Ludlum's death certificate about half a year earlier. Presumably, Miss Caroline Beach was a cousin or a niece.
