A daughter of Sayre Beach and Caroline Merriam Beach, she was born near Niagara Falls, where her father worked as a cabinet maker. The Beach family moved about, from Canada back to New York state, to Conneaut, Ohio, which is near the Pennsylvania border. At one point they lived in Pennsylvania, but then moved back to Conneaut.

Frances Maria Beach was the second wife of Marcus Bates Keyes, who was himself a son of Henry Keyes and Vesta Bates Keyes. Marcus' first wife Louise Gordon died after they had been married just 34 days. Marcus married Frances the following year, and they had just two children before Marcus died of consumption. He had been working as a merchant in Beloit, Wisconsin. After his death, Frances moved back to Ohio to raise her children.

In her old age, she lived with her daughter Mary's extended family in Chicago, which included son-in-law Elias Greenlee, two granddaughters Helen and Gertrude, and granddaughter Gertrude's husband and son, both named Walter Schuler.

Although she and her husband Marcus were married for only four years, and she outlived him by 51 years, she was buried next to him in Beloit, Wisconsin on December 2, 1911.
