R.J. Knotts, Sr. Dies May 27
Robert (Bob) J. Knotts, sr., 82, of Staten, died Tuesday, May 27, in a Parkersburg hospital, after a long illness.
Born near Nicut, on March 18, 1876, the son of the late William and Sarah Knotts, he was a political leader in Calhoun county for more than 50 years. He served three terms as sheriff and two terms as assessor of Calhoun county, his last term of assessor being ended at the close of 1956. He had been awarded a life time membership in the sheriff's association.
In former years he operated a general store and lumber business together with a stock farm near Nicut. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist church near Orma.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lillie Mace Knotts, four sons, Robert, Jr., of Grantsville, Russell of Springfield, O., Walter and Henry of Massillon, Ohio; three daughters, Mrs. N.C. Strimple of Youngstown, O., Mrs. A.H. Baker, Jr. of Apple Farm, and Mrs. Dallas Stump of Stumptown; one brother, George Warren Knotts of Nicut; two sisters, Mrs. D.O. Chenoweth of Parkersburg and Mrs. Emma Witt of Grantsville.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, June 1, at the Ebenezer Baptist church with the Rev. Whitt Stump officiating. Burial was in the Knotts chapel cemetery at Orma.
